2011-2012 Recap

First and foremost, thank you to all the students, teachers, activists, community members, critical thinkers, change agents and to all the beautiful people who attended our events this past year, helping make the 2011-2012 academic year a success. As you know, the 2011-2012 academic year was the Institute’s first under new Director Ernest Morrell, following on the shoulders of Dr. Edmund W. Gordon, whom our IUME campus is named and whom continues to be an important voice in all of our heads (and our hearts) in the work that we do. This year, we saw the IUME campus become a powerful and sorely needed physical and intellectual space where students, teachers and the greater Harlem community can come together to discuss critical issues that are often left out of the mainstream of educational research. This year we held and/or co-sponsored a number of graduate student/post-doctoral colloquiums, “Culture Circles,” campus events, and academic conferences as well as brought in two dynamic “Visiting Faculty Fellows” and continue to work with a number of community organizations and community leaders. We are humbled by not only your attendance at these events and in these partnerships, but by your support in being part of a coalition of people who are committed to improving the future for our kids and our communities.

With that being said, this year was only the beginning because while we had some accomplishments, there is much work to do–we must continue to emphasize youth, for they are the ones who should lead the way. We must continue to re-shape the educational research paradigm, creating research from the “bottom up” and not from the “top down.” And we must continue to all come together in the pursuit of social justice, not for the sake of us or for the sake of the Institute, but for the sake of brilliant students are who unfairly marginalized in schools in New York and across the country every single day. Thank you for joining with us this year–we look forward to working with all of you this summer and beyond! And don’t forget to check out some of our videos via our YouTube channel and pictures in our photo gallery from this past year (and more will be added soon).

A heartfelt thanks,

The IUME Team
